Top 10 tips to save energy

Using low-energy light bulbs isn’t the end of the story – it’s just one small step in the right direction. There’s lots we can all do to save energy and significantly reduce our carbon emissions. Here are 10 ways you can do your bit...

1. Use WWF’s footprint calculator

Find out how big an environmental impact you have (you might be shocked!) and for personal tips on how to reduce your footprint at the WWF One Planet footprint calculator.

2. Save on your heating

If you turn down your thermostat by just one degree, you could cut the energy you use by 10%. Simple things like closing your curtains when it gets dark will conserve heat too.

3. Use less electricity

Turn off electrical appliances like TVs, mobile phone chargers and computers at the wall instead of leaving them on standby. Keep your fridge between 3 and 5°C and your washing machine at 30 or 40°C will save energy too, as well as drying your clothes naturally, rather than using a tumble drier.

4. Make sure your water isn’t too hot

Your hot water thermostat should be set at 60°C/140°F.

5. Be more efficient with how you use light

It’s not just about switching energy-saving bulbs, but about not using unnecessary lights, and making sure you turn them off when you leave a room.

6. Consider making bigger energy saving changes to your home

You could insulate your roof, wall cavities, boiler, pipes and hot water tank to prevent heat loss. Fitting double or triple glazing would also help. Check out the WWF-backed Great British Refurb campaign.

7. Drive less

Walk or cycle instead. Share commutes with colleagues or friends. If you’re buying a new car, consider energy efficient or hybrid models. Even with electric cars, you need to consider how the electricity is originally generated.

8. Fly less

Consider travelling overland when you go on holiday – by train or bus.

9. Think about what you eat

Intensive food production (particularly of animal produce) uses a lot of energy during the growing and the manufacturing process. So think about eating less meat and dairy products, and avoid buying heavily processed food. Also try to buy food grown or made locally, to cut down on carbon emissions from transportation .
