Sustainable Shipping Initiative announces Vision for 2040

What would a truly sustainable shipping industry look like? The Sustainable Shipping Initiative’s (SSI) Vision 2040 is trying to answer this by tackling the most urgent challenges facing the industry, including rising oil prices, changing global trade patterns and growing scrutiny of its social and environmental performance.

The ambitious Vision marks a step-change in international efforts to make the shipping industry more sustainable following an extensive consultation with industry experts, governments and NGOs. In the coming months, four work-streams tasked with implementing the Vision will be set up, focusing on the development of new finance mechanisms to help spur innovation, encouraging the uptake of low-carbon technologies, reducing the life-cycle impact of ships and producing an overarching sustainability framework for the industry.

The SSI is an alliance of global companies and NGOs founded by WWF and Forum for the Future in September 2010. RSA is a member of SSI and will contribute to the implementation of the Vision’s key objectives, helping industry leaders identify and respond to risks and opportunities along the way.

Richard Turner, Marine Director at RSA commented: "As one of the world's leading marine insurers, we are delighted to be part of the coalition. A framework of this kind will prove invaluable in safeguarding the future of the industry and helping to mitigate the environmental impact of shipping."
